Hunting for prey Empty Hunting for prey

Post by Guest Fri Apr 01, 2011 3:36 pm

Cliste signalled to her patrol. They headed down the cliff again.
"Alright, you two." She said, perfectly comfortable with ordering these two higher ranking wolves. "We'll spread out and look for prey. A deer or elk is nice, but if you find smaller prey that you can manage on your own, take it."

Shadow growled, HE wasn't comfortable with the lower ranking ordering him about. "I scent a family of muntjack due north!" He snapped. "Surely you could have scented it?"

Cliste watched Shadow, saying nothing.
"If you're such a great hunter, why dont you and Lasair go catch it?" she finally said.

"|Fine... I will." He turned and took flight due north.
His black pelts flickering and his angry eyes blazing.

Lasair glared at Cliste and raced after Shadow up the mountainside. The leaves glistened with dew and wet his thick pelt as he chased after Shadow. The smell of muntjac deer was stronger now. He padded slowly and carefully up to Shadow, his mouth watering.
He crouched in the wet undergrowth and with a sharp glance at Shadow, he muttered, "It's alone. You attack from the back while I distract it from the front. One, Two, Three, GO!" He raced out of the undergrowth and towards the terrified muntjac. It barked in surprise and reared backwards. Saliva dripped from his jaws as he growled menacingly.
Suddenly, the muntjac let out a loud startling bark. A eerie sound of more muntjac calls echoed this way. "Quick Shadow! The others are coming!" he yowled impatiently.

OOC: It's muntjac not muntjack.

OOC: lol ok...
IC:
Shadow rolled his eyes, muntjak were small deer. Their only chance of staying alive is their speed.
His whiskers twitched and he leaped forward. he recovered smoothly as the slippery due nearly made
a fool of him. He snarled wit displeasure and rage.

The muntjak froze with shock. Shadow reared up and put his front paws on its back, rolling it over.
A deer when in shock has a 75% chance of dying anyway, so he could take his time a bit.
He licked his lips, and smiled coldly. Shadow leaned down and forced his jaws over the panicked deers head.
He grunted as he crunched down.
The deer in return threw its legs out. As straight as possible and motionless as if the back bone had been ruptured. He looked back to its wound he had passed onto it, He had crushed the back bone! He laughed and
turned. "How many more?"

Hunting for prey Empty Re: Hunting for prey

Meanwhile, Cliste was tracking smaller, not-so-dangerous prey: rabbits.
Standing still, letting her pelt dissolve into the background, she watched as a lean, strong rabbit hopped by.
Doing quick mental calculations, she burst out from behind the bush she was hiding behind and raced after the rabbit.
When it was close enough, she leapt....
And landed flat on her face. The rabbit got away.

"Quite a few. Let's go!" He vanished back into the undergrowth to wait for the 'rescue party' of the dead muntjac to arrive. The pack would eat well tonight.
It did not take very long for the 'rescue party' to arrive. He could scent three of them coming. Two younger ones, one adolescent and the last one is old. A very good combination. Saliva dripped from his mouth. He glanced at Shadow.

Cliste had to use all her self control to stop from howling in fury. How had that rabbit gotten away? She'd aimed correctly, or at least she thought she did, and it still ran off.
" Maybe stick to hunting in groups?" she asked herself, then shook the thought away. She'd probably fall again, and this time the hunting group would blame her.
"I dont care. Im going to find Lasair and Shadow and tell them the patrol's over. And if they refuse, they can answer to Fierie."
OOC: Sheesh shes really putting a lot of faith on Fierie.

Shadow had left the dead Muntjak. He waited for the 'Rescue patrol' to come in.
He licked his lips, the older male looked around warily. Killing the adolescent and
older male would disorientate the two youngsters...

He held his breathe, a little longer...

The Small deer rested their muzzles on the dead deer's side. Shadow leaped He'd taken
the Adolecent, leaving the older deer to Lasair
This Adolescent reared up and its sharp hooves cut and bruised Shadows chest and front legs,
winded but not beaten he grabbed hold of its neck and shook and shook and shook. He killed his quickly and
the bigger of the two younger deer took flight. He chased off after it leaving the elder muntjak and younger to Lasair.

The last thing heard from shadow was a shrill shriek of shock and agony.

"Shadow? Lasair? Where are you?" Cliste called. She followed their scent to an open plain where there were deer and mantjac grazing. But they were a little agitated.
"They've made a kill.." Cliste thought.

Cliste bounded down to the valley. "What happened?" she asked. Her thought of calling off the patrol disappeared.

Shadow had chased the deer down into a small gully. He'd fell down before he realised the mistake and both, wolf and deer fell down the steep bank. Shadows back had broken and he stared uselessly up into the never ending void of stars.
The muntjak was performing death spasms beside him. His jaws were slightly parted and the shine of the moon glinted ever so lightly on his canines. His tongue lolled out his mouth and a few flecks of blood and saliver were sperced onto his pelt.

Damn...Damn... Have I...been cursed? Were his last thoughts...

"Cliste!" Lasair yelped, "Don't panic yet! He's still alive. And look, farther on, there is a slope we can climb down to get him out."

He bounded away.

OOC:They will still let Shadow return to the pack or will they you know... kill him?

OOC: If he can't do anything useful anymore, Fierie will exile him. I'm reading 'Lone Wolf' now, the first book in 'Wolves of the Beyond' series.
IC: "But.. but, even if he does survive, what could he possibly do to help the pack?" Cliste asked.

Shadow still gazed up into nothing. His eyes looked to where the noise was coming from. Everything I'v worked for, my goals my hopes... Have all been marred, Damn you.
Frerie would not stand for him in her pack a liability.

OOC: Wolves are odd creatures, when a high role pack member is so bad they can't stand then the pack would kill him/her off. Its quicker then starving and some wolves with injuries
would grieve and starve. Unfortunatly Shadows broke his back, only a human can survive something like that other animals... Humans don't have enough heart to nurture and love something that is now useless to them.

OOC: This pack already has so little members and now Shadow has to die, or as good as it anyway.

IC: Lasair huffed and muttered, "Let's get him out of there first and decide what to do with him. Seriously, if it turns out that it isn't that bad, he may still pass. You never know. If it is so bad, it will be easier to end his misery." He raced down the slope and towards Shadow.

OOC: Did Shadow break his spinal cord? Which part of his back bone is broken?

IC: Lasair turned back to Cliste and muttered, "She knows our Pack has very little and if Shadow can heal quickly and is spared from death, you might know that he could go to our enemies and tell them everything about us. Our tiny Pack will be destroyed."
He faced Shadow and prodded him in the side. "How bad is it?"

IC: Cliste watched from afar, sighing as Lasair continued to prod Shadow.
"He's going to die, so why try to take him back? Better end his pain." she muttered, growling slowly.

IC:
Shadow gritted his teeth, his lower back had broken, there was a small chance.
"Prod me again..." He muttered through hot sticky blood, "and I'll rip your head off
and spit down your gullet..." His front paws twitched as he attempted to move and ended
up yowling in pain.

Cliste sighed, shaking her head and rolling her eyes.
"You know what'llhappen, dont you? Fierie wont let you be Epsilon now. Probably Omega, thats all you're good for now." she said with a nasty voice, because she knew he couldnt fight back. "And maybe she'll let ME take your place, and you'll be sitting there watching me!" she started to laugh (or whatever wolves do when theyre laughing), and she bounded away.
