Who's Dr. Who?

It's a famous British television show about a 1,100 year old alien named 'The Doctor'. He's a Time Lord from Gallifrey, a planet which he's responsible for deleting from existence (it was his planet or all of creation). He is the last of his race and his time-ship, called a TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension In Space, also the last of it's kind - TARDISs are grown, not made).
He looks human but his core temperature is 60 F, he has two hearts, his brain in green, he can see bits of time, he's mildly telepathic, he can survive in a non-oxygen environment for an unknown amount of time, and, when dying, he can change every single cell in his body. Said process is called 'regeneration'.
The concept was created when the man who played the first Doctor (William Hartnell, who was an old man) was dying.
That's why we say '10th Doctor' or '4th Doctor' and the like.

The term 'petrichor' is from the episode in season 6 of the rebooted series with Matt Smith as the 11th (and the latest) Doctor. In the episode the TARDIS's soul was taken from the blue box (a TARDIS has what is called a Chameleon Circuit. It's function is to disguise the TARDIS so it fits in with whatever timeline and planet it goes to, but it broke down in the 1960's in England. Now the TARDIS forever looks like an old Police Box)
and put into the body of a human.
The lovely human TARDIS sent a telepathic message to Rory (one of the Doctor's companions - hey, if you were the last of your kind you'd invite members of a race that resembled your own onto your time-ship as well) so he could get a door open. They (his wife was with him, Amy) got stuck on 'petrichor' and Amy named it for what it was, and they figured it out.

In conclusion, this show has been around since 1963, and is in the Guinness book of world records for the most viewed sci-fi television show.
Yes, it's more famous than Star Trek, and rightly so.
