Silverkit had rushed into her mother's den, filled with blind anger and grief. But now that she was here, she found that she was loathe to look at the shadow she knew was her mother.

The kit-that-could-have-been-apprentice looked around the slightly warmer den, around at the walls and the ceiling, taking in what her mother must have seen last. What about the ground? Silverkit slowly looked down at the packed dirt ground and shuddered when she noticed her mother's whiskers just within her line of sight.
Mother! Good memories flashed in her mind - that time back home when she first left the nursery - when she caught her first mouse for her mother - when Pigeonwing had told her and her littermates stories about Tawnystar.
Why does that have to be over now? Silverkit trembled where she stood.

Not far behind her, her sister, Frostkit, was making her way towards her.

The kits of Garnetheart and Pigeonwing spent a long time pressed against one another in the presence of their mother's corpse. Though they had not been present for farewell rituals before, the instinct and desire was their in them, so their ancestors gave them a pass.
It was a private and emotional event, filled with quiet whispers and shuffling silence, long sighs and stifled sobs.

Some of them found themselves longing for home in a way they never had before - with their youth and inexperience they did not realize that it was not the place, the location in this world, that they wanted, but the familiarity they wanted back. In the Ice-Shell that wasn't possible for them. Even in one another's presence it felt like they were still in the company of strangers in such a way that it was confusing for them.
But that was it - they wanted to go home. They wanted home back...

And wouldn't you know, that's just what the warrior Blueblossom had in mind.
