In the Healer's Den Empty In the Healer's Den

Lightningpelt looked towards the sound of the apprentice's voice, remembering his wide shoulders and golden pelt even in the tragic darkness that greeted her eyes.
"Better than my brother," she murmured. "His leg is infected... I can smell it from here." Her burnt tail flicked towards the sickly sweet smell of infection. "I'm worried," she whispered.

Goldpaw looked at the sleeping gray warrior. It was so strange to see him so still, so... frail. "Is there anything that can be done?"

Frostshine looked at his apprentice and mewed, "Not without the right herbs... I'm trying the best I can, but I'm afraid to try anything more than marigold and poppy seeds. I don't know any more or what they do - I don't want to kill him." He looked down at the brave warrior and mewed, "If only Mistlight were here."

Goldpaw nodded sadly to his mentor, looking at the well-stocked herbs but knowing nothing about them. He looked back at Lightningpelt and mewed, "Can I do anything?"

Frostshine mewed tentatively, "I'm sorry I haven't been training you, Goldpaw. You're close to your final assessment, you know."

Goldpaw nodded, flicking his tail dismissively. "It's okay." He lay down next to Lightingpelt, waiting for her response.

Lightingpelt leaned into the tom's fur, listening to the sound of him breathing. "Not really," she mewed quietly. "I know I'll never be a warrior again." She fell silent, closing her ruined eyes. "I'm just useless." Her scorched, skin-patched tail twitched slightly.

Goldpaw rested his chin on top of the she-cat's head. "No," he murmured firmly. "Not to me." He closed his eyes, enjoying where he was more than he ever had before.

Lightingpelt smiled slightly, glad to be where she was.

(EDIT) It was a good thing that Goldpaw was with her at that time. It made Smokepelt happy to know that his beloved sister would have someone to watch over her in the waking world.
And I'll watch over you from StarClan, sister.
Smokepelt exhaled for the last time as the infection in his leg claimed him.
