Death Witness

A battle cry split the air as Redtail, deputy of ThunderClan, ordered the patrol to attack. Ravenpaw has always been jumpy, but now he was fighting to defend ThunderClan, my Clan.

Mousefur gave a defiant screech and leaped onto a RiverClan warrior, pummeling the tom to the ground with unsheathed claws. Ravenpaw lingered at the edge of the clearing for a heartbeat, but stumbled when a paw prodded him sharply in his side.

“Get out there!” hissed Tigerclaw, his mentor. The dark brown tom launched himself back into the mass of wreathing cats, his eyes alight and burning into the battle. Ravenpaw raced into the battle, senses wildly alert. Pain pierced his ear as a RiverClan tom clawed at him. He whipped around, muscles tense and tail lashing. His gaze met the blazing amber gaze of the RiverClan deputy, Oakheart.

“Sunningrocks is ours,” he hissed, advancing toward Ravenpaw. He knew he was no match for the ferocious dappled cat. He leaped at him, claws outstretched.

Ravenpaw instinctively ducked under Oakheart and leaped on top of the stunned tom. He dug his claws into the thick tabby fur. With a massive heave, Oakheart shoved him off with his hind legs and prepared to attack him.

A flash of ginger fur and Oakheart was on the bloody ground, wrestling with Redtail. Ravenpaw staggered as he got to his paws, planning to help Redtail. He glanced around the screeching clearing, well aware he could be attacked any moment, but StarClan protected the jumpy apprentice. There were less ThunderClan cats in the clearing, outnumbered by RiverClan warriors.

Redtail screeched as Oakheart bit his shoulder. Ravenpaw leaped on Oakheart. The RiverClan deputy let go of Redtail and whipped around. A brown shape slammed into Ravenpaw, shoving him into the crevice of a rock.

Then he heard Tigerclaw hiss, “Stay here!” and go help Mousefur, who was being held down by a gray tom. Ravenpaw recognized Stonefur from Gatherings and crouched deeper into the rock. Tigerclaw launched himself at the gray tom and told Mousefur to run. The dusky brown she-cat took one look at the tabby warrior, nodded her thanks, and disappeared into the forest, shadows swallowing her form.

Tigerclaw and Stonefur screeched in a knot of claws and teeth as they fought. Oakheart staggered to his paws and raced to help his Clanmate. He pulled Tigerclaw off of Stonefur and hissed something Ravenpaw would never forget.

“No ThunderClan cat will ever harm Stonefur,” he hissed, shoving Stonefur towards RiverClan territory.

Ravenpaw watched as Tigerclaw was about to tear Oakheart's throat out when Redtail yowled, “ThunderClan, retreat! Retreat!” and raced to help Tigerclaw.

Tigerclaw let Redtail attack Oakheart and dashed over to the rock he had shoved Ravenpaw into.
“Go back to camp!” he growled, pushing Ravenpaw toward the forest. Ravenpaw crashed through the forest, unaware what happened to his mentor and the deputy.

What if something happened to them? I have to go back! He halted, skidding on the leaves on the forest floor. He dashed back towards Sunningrocks, desperate to see if his Clanmates were all right. He hid in a bush and gasped in horror as rocks collapsed on top of Oakheart and Redtail. A screech of pain and then nothing.

Dust hung in the air like mist in the cold leaf-bare mornings. Redtail bounded out of the dust, his fur spiked up in terror. And then Ravenpaw saw it in slow motion: Redtail running into Tigerclaw, who had concealed himself in the dark shadows. Tigerclaw leaped on top of the ginger warrior and bit his spine, killing Redtail instantly.

Ravenpaw felt as if his paws had grown roots to the forest floor like the trees he was so use to. He forced himself to run and crashed through the bracken and thorns as he raced back to the ThunderClan camp. His own mentor had killed noble Redtail.

Why? was all he could ask himself. He shuddered violently and never forgot the scene he just witnessed.

I'm working on that writing contest right now, pretty good, though the theme 'Meaning of life' is a lil cliche.
