Seraph's Light: Guidance in the night
The height of winter. A time that promised cold, frozen muscles, ice-covered wings, and little to no prey around.
Geira flew alone, her small form doing little to conserve what little body heat she could produce in her emaciated body. Her joints screamed for her to stop. But when she put out her talons to grab a nearby branch, it snapped, being brittle from the weather, and she would struggle to keep from falling to her death as splinters rained down on the white-carpet ground.
At one point a particularly large snowstorm blew in from the north, pounding the sooty owl until for every five times she flapped, the wind blew her back six wingbeats worth of distance. She tumbled over and over in the heart of the chilly cloud, futilely dodging the hailstones that rained on her. When the storm slowed until she could see, Geira was dismayed to find that there was no light, not from the moon or the stars. The dense fog had blocked out all sources of light.
Owls could see well in the dark, much better than any other birds, but even that adaptation wasn't much use when there was no light to reflect. Geira felt despair creep up on her like a predator, about to pounce the instance she gave up hope.
But hope wasn't lost! Through the cloud, like some blessing from Phoenixclan, an intensely bright light broke through the cover and washed its luminescence over the sky. Narrowing her eyes against the wind, Geira saw it was like looking the sun right in the eye, but this was like a little of the sun's glorious light that had broken away from its master and joined the night stars. Overcome with relief, Geira unfolded her wings, filled with new strength, and flew with all her strength towards the light. She ignored the snowflakes that cut across her feathers, leaving raw patches on her skin. She ignored the wind that seemed to mock her. She just strained and flapped against the resistance, finally breaking free of the snowstorm, bathing in the light of the unearthly star.
Above the clouds it was unnervingly quiet. Geira could see everything, even the mountains from which she had come. The star was even brighter from above the cloud, and the owl had to look at it out of the corner of her eye.
"Thank you," she rasped, voice hoarse from swallowing so much ice. "Thank you, Phoenixclan." Even as she said it, she realized that this star wasn't the work of Phoenixclan. It was like a voice was whispering over and over in her tufty ears, brainwashing her and making her forget. Come to the Haven, it murmured, before fading to the deathly silence.
Following the whisper's instructions almost mechanically, Geira folded her wings, avoiding the snowstorm, and fell to earth. She realized that just adjascent to the mountains was a wide expanse of land. It looked like a forest, grasslands, ocean and desert all put together. The force drew her to the grasslands where a mountain-sized hill rose above everything, just able to reach the lowest peak of the mountains.
A dark shadow rose from the hill, which Geira could see had a tall tree on top of it. A black kite revealed himself, but what was strange was that this bird had on a strange cloak made of some kind of thick dark fur.
"Welcome!" the kite said, in an exaggeratedly enthusiastic voice. "This is Flyght Haven, where all birds are free from the tyranny of the Featherless ones." It seemed as if he were welcoming a Very Important Bird rather than one that looked like she'd just escaped a fight with a snowman. "The star that guided you out of the storm is known as the Seraph's Eye. Unfortunately, the Flyght Haven council are well aware that many of the birds who come here come with a blasphemous belief in some force known as Phoenixclan. Do you?" At once his eyes became stern and demanding.
"Y-yes," Geira stammered, afraid to give the wrong answer. Apparently she had.
"That settles it," the kite said, turning to head back to the tree. "Come. It's time for stargazing."
OOC: MY HAND! Plus I typed this with a wrenched shoulder. Owwwwww.....

Re: Seraph's Light: Guidance in the night
The snowstorm was nearly a blinding white cloud of frost. Only the keen in sight could have ever been able to escape such a blizzard. Kusu's wings weren't affected by the battering breeze what so ever. She was well used to flying for long periods of time, but Serae on the underhand would have been thrown to the ground at least several hours before they hit the side of the mountains. Serae now felt like a hollow bone ice sickle! Clinging on for dear life onto Kusu's silky feathers and neck.
" Look!" He exclaimed, " Over there! I see a star!" " Thank Phoenixclan that were almost out of this" Kusu moaned, but silence took it's toll as she nearly crashed into a stone pillar when admiring the bright star. She took a great reaction and flicked her tail wing so quickly her whole body immediately turned to the side. Serae lost his grip on her neck and began to plummet to the ground. " Serae!" Kusu yelled over the storm " You Have Wings You Know!" Serae, struggling to open in wings from so much tension, opened them and flew strait up from an updraft.
With the two sailing onwards, Serae noticed the forest from above, and began to lower himself in elevation. Kusu followed as she knew what he was doing.
By the time the came to the ground, they were panting, both of their feathered bodies nearly shivering and ice spread slightly on their wings. " we... we made it" Serae panted, nearly on his chest breathing excessively.

Re: Seraph's Light: Guidance in the night
OOC: Found it!
IC: “Stargazing?” Geira hooted warily.
“Stargazing,” the kite confirmed, still in his ridiculously high-pitched tweet. “If you’re going to stay, you have to know the stars around the area.”
“Wait, who said I was going to stay?”
“Why would you not stay?” the kite challenged.
Geira made an almost full head turn and took in the area. The grasslands were still lush and green even in the winter. Some were even bearing flowers. In fact, it looked as if it wasn’t winter at all within Flyght Haven, though outside it was a bleak white world.
“The Seraph’s Eye does that,” the kite explained, as if he’d read the sooty owl’s mind. “Its heat is so radiant, white-hot, that any snow which comes within the area melts instantly to rain. This rain keeps the plains green. What’s more, in the summer it protects us from those pesky No-feathers, because it resembles a sun at night, and they fear what they don’t understand.”
“Do you?”
“Belief in the star’s abilities to protect us is vital for survival here,” the kite went on, as if she hadn’t spoken. “It’s what binds the birds together in everything we do. Ah here we are.” He raised one claw to point at a rocky outcrop on top of one of the high peaks to the west of the place. He then folded his wings and extended both talons, dropping slightly and coming to a perfect stop. Geira wasn’t so lucky. When she curled her talons to grip the ground, she skidded, friction searing off a few layers of the skin on her feet. Her claws screeched against the hard stone and sparks flew.
When Geira steadied herself, she looked up to find the kite staring at her. Embarrassed by her poor landing skills, she muttered a rueful, “I’ve only ever landed on trees…”
“Tauro,” the kite said. “My name is Tauro. Look up.”
Still slightly disorientated from the landing, the owl did, and forgot everything.
If possible, this was the perfect vantage point to observe the Seraph’s Eye. Its light drowned out that of the other stars, and though at first it blinded her, Geira couldn’t pull her eyes away from its mesmerizing light.
“The sun is the center of the day,” Tauro recited, his voice sounding faraway, background noise before the quiet hum that seemed to come from the star. “The stars the eyes of the night. But there is only one eye that sees all, the Seraph’s Eye.”
Mindlessly, Geira nodded. The initial glare of the Seraph’s Eye seemed to have dimmed down, to only a pale gold luminescence.
“Let the star’s light wash over you,” Tauro whispered, voice soft, “from this day you will know it as your own light.”
The white flash in Geira’s eyes glinted brighter. Her pupils seemed to dilate to small black dots.
“Rise!” Tauro shouted, suddenly loud and demanding. “Rise, fly to it!”
Without thinking Geira unfolded her wings and flapped them, extending them to their full length.
“Rise!” the kite repeated forcefully, as the sooty owl shot into the sky like a rocket.

Re: Seraph's Light: Guidance in the night
OOC: NK, this post is kinda not leading to anything... anyways, to keep it moving, here's permission to use a bird from the Council to enter Kusu and that... parrot guy, into the ranks! Name generator, activate.....
IC: Up in the sky it was quiet. Away from the snowstorm outside the boundaries, there was nothing between Geira and the star.
The Seraph's Eye radiated immense heat up close. For a second, it seemed as if Geira could just touch it with her beak...
As she flew up, something suddenly rushed past her, just in front of her, between the star and the sooty owl. It was a white and blue-grey bird, and to her horror, it was much, much bigger than any other bird of prey, even Tauro, that she'd seen before.
The giant raptor slowed mid-flight. It turned, regarding her with cold blue eyes. For a while Geira considered whether it could speak.
"Greetings," the raptor said. It... or rather he; the bird had a voice not unlike a young male owl without the resounding boom, had a kind of accent, thick, but sounded as if he'd spent a lot of time around the parts. "I am Ezra, leader of the Council of Flyght Haven, from the line of Typhon since the time of the Rising."
Geira nodded, not really understanding what the last part meant.
"I see you have not seen a harpy before," Ezra continued. His wings flapped slowly; they had to be at least three times longer than any owl's. "We are a species of raptor from far south. My parents were one of the pioneers who founded Flyght Haven long ago. They have passed, sadly, but I live on. I continue the legacy of my bloodline." At the last sentence his voice seemed to grow deeper, sounding almost adult, even though that was one thing he was not.
"Does my age surprise you, owl?" the harpy eagle asked, seeing Geira tongue-tied. "I am only 1 year old."
The sooty owl had to rear back at this. She'd once considered herself young, but this eagle was even younger than the age most owls left their homes. "Then... how did you achieve such a high position?"
Ezra shook his head. "It matters not. Look at the star, and tell me what you see."
"Is this some kind of a test?" Geira asked suspiciously.
"Yes."
OOC: And the name of the bird Kusu and... parrot, will meet is.... Narok! He's a red-tailed hawk. The rest you can decide.

Re: Seraph's Light: Guidance in the night
OOC: It's Serae and he's a parakeet!
And narok? I don't have any idea of how he/she reacts, the whole idea of the council and etc..
Yea, I suck at remembering stuff like that!
IC: With Serae coiled up in Kusu's clear white feathers, She trotted onward, unknown of the area ahead of her. Where are we? She constantly thought, her webbed feet feeling warm to the ground resembling to the snow storm she had been stuck in for at least 5 hours at most.
She slowed her pace as the sight of red flashing in the corner of her eyes, This place hold civilization as well? she thought, unknown the thought about who could be here.

Re: Seraph's Light: Guidance in the night
OOC: He. Little tidbit: I got his name from Ragnarok, just cut off the 'rag' so actually I developed 2 names from that word, Morag and Narok. Anyway the Flyght Haven Council could be thought of as Stallone/Hitler: charismatic (to an extent), unaccepting of any religion other than their own, but really desperate to swell the ranks. The 'test' aforementioned involves looking into one's past (kind of like the process in which Phoenixclan decides whether you go to heaven or hell) so the Flyght Haven birds believe in Phoenixclan more than they know. That's radical thinking for you. And hopefully this doesn't turn full-out Al-Qaeda (is that how you spell it? That terrorist group run by the late Osama bin Laden....)
IC: Ezra nodded his head. "This isn't going to hurt anyone."
Geira wound have raised an eyebrow had she any to raise, and instead turned her flexible owl's head around and focused on the heart of that light ahead of her.
OOC: Wow, the OOC is longer than the IC....
